Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

You are collected from your Arusha hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport after breakfast and drive southwest by 4x4, around two to three hours, to Tarangire National Park. Tarangire is known for its very large elephant herds and its ancient baobab trees, which stand thick across the grassland. In the dry season wildlife gathers along the Tarangire River, so you can expect zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, buffalo and strong birdlife, with lion and leopard possible near the water. You game drive through the afternoon, roughly four to five hours, with a picnic lunch en route or at the lodge on arrival. The park has a wild, uncrowded feel and wide valley views. Dinner and overnight at a lodge or tented camp near Tarangire on a full-board basis.

Day 2: Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast you drive to Lake Manyara National Park, about one to two hours, at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. You enter through a green groundwater forest alive with baboons and blue monkeys, then reach the open floodplains beside the soda lake, where flamingos and pelicans gather in numbers. Manyara is known for elephants, hippos and its tree-climbing lions, sometimes seen resting in the acacias. You spend the day on game drives along the lakeshore and forest tracks, with a picnic lunch, for around five to six hours of viewing including the transfer. The escarpment backdrop makes for fine photographs in soft light. Dinner and overnight at a lodge or tented camp near Manyara or in the Karatu area on a full-board basis.

3

Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater game drive

After an early breakfast you drive up to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend the steep access road onto the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera. Its floor holds grassland, swamp, forest and a soda lake, with one of the densest wildlife populations in Africa. In a morning and midday drive you can see lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, flamingos and, with luck, the endangered black rhino, giving a real chance at the big five in a single day. You take a picnic lunch beside the hippo pool, then climb back to the rim in the afternoon, for around six hours of game viewing on the crater floor. Dinner and overnight at a lodge near the crater or in the Karatu area on a full-board basis.

Day 4: Ngorongoro to Arusha and depart

After breakfast you drive back towards Arusha, about three to four hours, with a possible stop at a Maasai market or curio shop along the way. On arrival you can freshen up at a day room if your flight is later, or transfer straight to Kilimanjaro International Airport, roughly one hour from Arusha, for your onward departure. Your guide handles the drop-off and any final arrangements. Breakfast is included, with lunch depending on your flight time. This closes a short but full safari that took in three of the northern circuit's best parks, from the elephants of Tarangire to the crater floor of Ngorongoro. Safe travels home.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to take this short safari?

The dry season from June to October is the most popular, when wildlife concentrates near the Tarangire River and the soda lake at Manyara and the thinner bush makes viewing easier. It is peak season, so parks and lodges are busier and prices higher. The short rains in November and the long rains from March to May bring greener country, fewer vehicles and lower cost, with occasional afternoon showers. The Ngorongoro Crater is rewarding all year because its wildlife is largely resident, which makes this route a solid choice in any season. Because the trip is short and stays in the parks closest to Arusha, it works well as a first safari, a taster, or an add-on to a beach holiday or business trip. Your operator can advise the best window for your dates.

Is four days enough for a real safari?

Yes, for a focused trip. Four days is enough to visit three strong parks close to Arusha and get a genuine feel for the northern circuit, including big elephant herds, flamingos, and a big-five chance in the crater. What it does not include is the Serengeti, which sits further west and needs more time and driving, so if the great migration is your main goal you would want a longer itinerary. For travellers with limited days, or those adding safari to another trip, four days delivers a lot without long transfers. If you can spare two or three more days, extending into the Serengeti turns this into the full classic circuit. As it stands, this is an efficient, rewarding short safari.

What wildlife will I see?

Across the three parks you get good variety. Tarangire is elephant and baobab country, with zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, buffalo and rich birdlife, and lion or leopard possible near the river in the dry season. Lake Manyara adds hippos, large flocks of flamingos and pelicans, troops of baboons and blue monkeys, and the chance of lions resting in the trees. The Ngorongoro Crater is the highlight for sheer density, with lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, flamingos and a real chance at the endangered black rhino, which can complete a big-five sighting in a single drive. Birdlife is strong throughout. Wildlife is wild, so no sighting is guaranteed on a given drive, but visiting three varied parks in four days gives you a good spread of chances.

How much driving is involved?

The transfers on this route are relatively short compared with longer circuits. It is about two to three hours from Arusha to Tarangire, one to two hours from Tarangire to Manyara, and a similar stretch up to the Ngorongoro Crater, with roughly three to four hours back to Arusha at the end. Roads inside the parks are rough and dusty, which is normal for safari. Your 4x4 has a pop-up roof for viewing and photography and comfortable seating, and your guide combines the transfers with game viewing so time on the road rarely feels wasted. Because you stay in the parks nearest Arusha, this trip avoids the very long drives that a Serengeti itinerary involves, which is part of what makes it a good short option.

Do I need malaria tablets and vaccinations?

Yes. These parks are in malaria areas, so antimalarial tablets are strongly advised and should be started before arrival as your doctor directs. Use insect repellent, cover up at dusk and dawn, and sleep under the nets provided at camps. A yellow fever certificate may be required if you are arriving from or transiting a country where yellow fever is present, so check your routing. Make sure routine vaccinations are current, and many travellers also cover hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus. Visit a travel clinic four to six weeks before you go so any course has time to take effect and you get advice tailored to your health. Carry your personal medication in hand luggage along with a small first-aid kit, even on a short trip.

Is this suitable for families and first-timers?

It is a good fit for both. The short transfers, gentle pace and vehicle-based game drives suit families with children, older travellers and anyone new to safari. Most of your time is spent seated in the 4x4, with only short walks at lodges and viewpoints, so you do not need to be especially fit. The crater descent and all game viewing are done by vehicle. For young children, check minimum-age rules at some lodges and remember that early starts and full days can be tiring. A private departure gives families the most flexibility over timing, meals and pace. If anyone has a mobility need or health condition, tell your operator when booking so the vehicle and pace can be arranged to suit.

Is it private or group, and how far ahead should I book?

The trip can run privately for just your party, with your own guide and vehicle, or as a small shared group departure to spread the cost, and single travellers are welcome on either. Standard rates assume two people sharing a room, so a single supplement applies if you want your own space. Because it is short and popular, book as early as you can, ideally several months ahead for the June to October and December to February peaks, when lodges near the crater fill quickly. Prices vary with the season and the standard of accommodation you choose, and park fees are higher in peak months. Booking early secures your dates and preferred lodges and usually the better rates, and gives your operator time to tailor the details.

What should I pack for a four-day safari?

Even for a short trip, pack light, neutral-coloured clothing in layers, since early mornings and the crater rim are cold while midday is hot. Bring a warm fleece or jacket, a light rain layer, a sun hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens are well worth carrying, along with spare batteries and memory cards. Comfortable closed shoes, a small daypack and a refillable water bottle are handy, and a dust scarf and wet wipes help with the dusty park roads. Carry any personal medication in your hand luggage. Soft duffel bags travel better in safari vehicles than hard cases. Most lodges offer laundry, so there is no need to overpack for four days.
