Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Mikumi

After an early breakfast your guide collects you in Dar es Salaam and you drive west toward Mikumi National Park, a trip of around four to five hours through the Uluguru foothills and past Morogoro. The road is paved and the scenery pleasant, with a stop to stretch and buy snacks along the way. You reach the park around midday, check in, and have lunch. In the afternoon you set out on your first game drive across the Mkata floodplain, the open grassland at the heart of the park. Herds of zebra, wildebeest, giraffes, and impala graze here, and elephants and buffalo are often close to the road. As the sun drops you head to your lodge. Overnight at a family friendly lodge or tented camp near the park. Meals: Lunch, Dinner.

Day 2: Full Day Game Drive

You have a full day to explore Mikumi at a relaxed pace that suits families. After breakfast you drive out onto the Mkata floodplain, the richest area for wildlife, where lions rest in the grass and climb the odd tree, and where cheetahs are sometimes seen. You visit the hippo pools, where hippos wallow and snort in the water alongside crocodiles and many birds, a favourite with children. Giraffes, elephants, buffalo, zebra, and several kinds of antelope are all common. Your guide explains the animals and their behaviour in a way that keeps younger travellers interested. You break for a picnic lunch at a shaded spot in the park. In the afternoon you continue game viewing before returning to your lodge for the evening. Overnight at a family friendly lodge or tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 3: Morning Drive and Return to Dar

On your last morning you enjoy an early game drive when the air is cool and the animals are active, giving a final chance to see anything you have missed, from big cats to the many birds Mikumi is known for. After the drive you return to the lodge for breakfast and to pack. Around midday you begin the drive back to Dar es Salaam, retracing the route past Morogoro, with a stop for lunch and to rest along the way. You reach the city in the afternoon. Depending on your plans your guide drops you at your hotel, at the airport for an onward flight, or at the ferry if you are continuing to Zanzibar. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Mikumi?

Mikumi is good for wildlife all year, but the dry season from June to October is the easiest time to see game, as animals gather near the remaining water and the grass on the Mkata floodplain is short and open. The dry months also mean better roads and fewer mosquitoes. The green season from November to May brings rain, newborn animals, and plenty of birds, including migrants, though the grass grows tall and some tracks get muddy. The short break between the rains around January and February can be pleasant. Because Mikumi is close to Dar es Salaam and the main road is paved, the park is reachable in any season, which makes it a handy choice for a quick safari at short notice or a weekend away from the coast.

Is Mikumi good for families with children?

Mikumi is one of the best parks in Tanzania for a family safari. The drive from Dar es Salaam is short and on a good road, so children are not stuck in the car for days. The open floodplain means animals are easy to spot without long searching, which keeps younger children engaged, and the hippo pools are always a hit. Game drives can be kept short and flexible to match children's attention spans, with breaks at picnic sites. Lodges near the park are set up for families, often with pools and larger rooms. Guides used to working with children explain the wildlife simply and patiently. Most parks accept children of all ages for game drives, though very young children should be watched closely. This trip is a gentle, low cost way to give a family their first taste of safari.

What wildlife will we see?

Mikumi has a good spread of classic safari wildlife on its open plains. The Mkata floodplain, often likened to a small Serengeti, is home to elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, impala, and other antelope, all easy to see in the open. Lions live here and are regularly spotted resting in the grass, and the park has a few that climb trees. Hippos and crocodiles fill the hippo pools, and the birdlife is rich, with more than four hundred species including colourful lilac breasted rollers and yellow throated longclaws. Leopards, hyenas, and jackals are present but harder to find. Cheetahs and wild dogs pass through at times. While it is not as crowded with animals as the northern crater, a two day visit usually turns up a strong list of big game and birds.

How far is Mikumi and how do we get there?

Mikumi sits about three hundred kilometres west of Dar es Salaam, a drive of roughly four to five hours on a tarmac road through Morogoro. This is one of the park's biggest attractions, as it is the only major game park you can reach from Dar in half a day by road, with no need to fly. The main highway actually runs through the park, so you sometimes see animals before you even start your game drive, and speed limits apply to protect wildlife on the road. For those short on time, a light aircraft can be arranged to a nearby airstrip, but most visitors drive, as the road trip is straightforward and part of the experience. The short access is what makes Mikumi ideal for a quick family break or a first safari.

Do we need malaria tablets and vaccinations?

Mikumi and the Dar es Salaam area are malaria zones, so anti malarial tablets are advised, especially for a family trip. See a travel clinic before you leave, and for children get advice on the right medication and dose. Use repellent, dress everyone in long sleeves at dusk, and sleep under the nets provided. A yellow fever certificate is needed only if you arrive from a country where the disease is present. Keep routine vaccines such as tetanus, hepatitis A, and typhoid current for the whole family. Bring sun cream, hats, and any regular medication in your hand luggage, along with a basic first aid kit for children. Drink only the bottled water provided. The park is warm and low lying, so light clothing works well, with a layer for cool early mornings on game drives.

Should we book privately or join a group?

For families, a private safari usually works best, as it gives you your own vehicle and guide and full control over the timing of drives, meals, and rest, which matters with children. The family tier of this trip keeps costs reasonable by using comfortable but not luxury lodges and road transfer rather than flights. Group departures are cheaper still but give less flexibility, which can be harder with young children. Because Mikumi is close and the trip is short, even a private version stays affordable compared with the northern parks. Prices rise a little in the dry peak season when lodges are busier, and drop in the green season. Ask the operator for a family quote based on the number and ages of your children, as parks often charge lower fees for younger children.

What should we pack, and how far ahead should we book?

Pack light, practical clothing in neutral colours, with shorts and shirts for the warm days and a light layer for cool early mornings on game drives. Bring sun hats, sunglasses, sun cream, and insect repellent for everyone, plus comfortable shoes. A pair of binoculars and a camera add a lot, and for children a simple animal checklist or a small notebook makes the drives more fun. Do not forget any regular medication, a basic first aid kit, and refillable water bottles. As for booking, Mikumi can often be arranged at fairly short notice thanks to its easy access, but for the busy dry season and school holidays it is wise to book a few weeks or months ahead to secure the better family lodges. Confirm the ages of your children when booking so fees and room types are set correctly.
